Get Your Nails Done Or Do Them Yourself?
In my early twenties I enjoyed going to the nail salon to get pampered and have a fresh set of fingernails and toenails. Typically two reasons sent me to the salon, I had a big event coming up or if I'm getting too stressed and overwhelmed. Seeing my nails clean and colorful always helped me feel more put together, relieving some of that pent up stress.
I have very dry skin so my cuticles and rough hands/feet were never a good combo (doesn't help that I am a germaphobe and wash my hands constantly). My nail tech advised me to use Vaseline (petroleum jelly) over lotion to keep the dryness from returning so quickly! It works great but since it is so oily, it's best to wear hand gloves and socks overnight slathered in that magical goop.
As I get older and the rise of acrylic nails, salons are too pricey for me, I do it myself! And it's quite the relaxing day just concentrating on beautifying my hands and feet! I get a lot of press on nails either inside a Walmart or drug store. If I'm buying online, I'll use Glamermaid and buy a few sets at a time, but feel free to comment any other sites you recommend!
Other downsides to salons are that they are typically very busy due to how popular nail trends have gotten. Many times I would have to wait 30+ mins, even with an appointment made! As a germaphobe, I never liked the thought of sharing mani and pedi stations but I would get over it for the nice service provided. But over the last few years, I would pay more for the same manicure and pedicure combo, yet the service would still be less!
Every mani and pedi would come with longer massages and longer soaking/scrubbing. But they either just don't provide that part of the service or do it for such a little amount of time that it's unproductive for spending more money. So now that salon service has declined while their prices are still high, I completely do them myself and they look perfect!
Make Manicures Easier
If you decide to not use a salon like me, you'll need a few tools. For frequent nail doers like me, it may be best to use an electric filer instead of a regular one. Additional examples of needed nail items can be found here.
Here is a step by step list in case you are new to this process or doing nails
Remove polish
Soak nails for 10 minutes to soften skin
use cuticle trimmer for looser dead skin
Bring out the electric file to sand off the dry skin around the nail
or regular file to shave off dead skin, not just shape the nail!
Lightly run the file over the nail to help the paint or glue stick to it better. Chemicals bond to surfaces better if they are not smooth.
be sure to blow off the area to be free of debris
Use an alcohol pad over each nail to remove extra oils to help paint or adhesive stay on longer
Paint or Press On to decorate your nails!
I like to use press on nails with sticky pads over nail glue, just because nail glue is so powerful and very chemically potent. Which is why he nail glue is saved for big events and the sticky pads are used every other time. It is nice that the pads peel off easily, but they won't last as long since there's slightly more space under the fake nail when using the pads
